Mizell Senior Center

Mizell Senior Center is the place for active aging adults in Palm Springs to come together to get fit, enjoy learning new skills, be entertained, and enjoy a nutritious meal with friends at an affordable price. With more than 2,100 full-time resident and seasonal members, Mizell is dedicated to keeping our aging population active and healthy. With an annual membership of just $25, Mizell welcomes people of any age to join and participate in a variety of enriching experiences. In addition to offering 50+ activities each month from live music to one-on-one Medicare insurance counseling, Mizell is known for providing nutritious and balance meals and the award-winning A Matter of Balance for falls prevention classes across the Coachella Valley. Meals On Wheels is a lifeline for home-bound seniors who may otherwise not receive nutritious meals. In the 2016-2017 fiscal year more than 170,000 meals were delivered by caring, professional drivers to vulnerable clients from Whitewater to the North shore of the Salton Sea. Not only do our drivers deliver an average of 450 meals a day, they are often the only person a client will see and are trained to check on a clients’ general condition and for any signs of elder abuse. Most of our clients live at 90% below federal poverty standards and our Board of Directors had mandated that we will not have a waiting list for people to eat. In addition, Mizell provided 51,000 lunches at nine senior and community centers across the Coachella Valley. A grant from the Riverside County Office on Aging provides 80% of the funding for the agreed upon number of clients. That number is well below the actual number of meals we served to our vulnerable, aging neighbors. A Matter of Balance is an evidence-based course designed to address the physical and psychological concerns of older adults who fear the possibility of falling. By improving physical strength and situational awareness, participants have shown increased activity levels and reduced social isolation. As of June 2018, nineteen host locations from Desert Hot Springs to Mecca saw 160 certified coached, many of whom speak Spanish, help 1,061 seniors complete the A Matter of Balance course. “I have my life back. I don’t have any more stay at home and feel sorry for myself days.” –Fall Prevention Program Participant. The program was initially funded by The Auen Foundation and the Regional Access Program. Desert Healthcare District also provided a grant to help continue the program. The Mizell Stars Club is our annual giving program which provides donors with not only the satisfaction of helping their vulnerable and hungry neighbors, but with tickets to our annual Stars Among Us Gala, our Modernism Week events and access to exclusive parties and events for Stars Club members. A Gold Star membership is $5,000 and could provide gasoline for our eight Meals On Wheels vans for two months and you receive six gala tickets plus four to our Modernism Week event. A Silver Star membership at $2,500 provides four tickets to the Gala and our Modernism event while feeding a homebound senior for one year. The Bronze Star membership of $1,500 can go a long way in purchasing fresh food for our home delivered meals! In exchange, you and a guest will enjoy our gala and Modernism event.
