Palm Springs Writers Guild

The Palm Springs Writers Guild (The Guild), a nonprofit organization with more than 250 active members, was founded over 40 years ago. The Guild's philanthropic community focus continues to be the Scholarship Program for area college-bound high school seniors pursuing a writing career. This energetic community continues to elevate and celebrate aspiring and seasoned writers of all genres. The Guild engages with Coachella Valley businesses and communities to develop and enhance the skills of all writers. The Guild offers to Members and Non-Members who write nonfiction, fiction, memoirs, and poetry monthly intensive writing and publishing workshops and writing labs featuring prestigious industry speakers. In addition, the annual and much anticipated Desert Writers Expo celebrates Guild authors and their published books. The Guild further supports its community of writers through critique groups held in cities across the Coachella Valley, along with a variety of judged writing contests To learn more visit: The Guild's Scholarship Program The education mission of the Palms Springs Writers Guild is to inspire and nurture Coachella Valley writers of all ages, including student writers, with a focus on English Language Learners. We believe in giving voice to the aspirations of students by offering a variety of writing workshops, contests, and scholarships. The Guild is also proud of its members paying it forward to the next generation of writers through supporting and facilitating High School Writing Contests, a Scholarship Fund, and Boys & Girls Club Writing Workshops. This past year the Guild sponsored a writing contest, “The Power of Music,” with the Coachella Valley High School. Over 130 student essays were submitted and read by the school’s Language Arts teachers. Judges from the Guild selected 3rd, 2nd, and 1st place winners. The winning students were awarded cash prizes along with a framed certificate, and the local NBC broadcast recognized their achievements. The Guild is expanding its outreach to young writers by offering writing scholarships for Coachella Valley college-bound high school seniors and periodic workshops on various forms of written communication. The Palm Springs Writers Guild’s scholarship fundraising goal is to provide $5,000 scholarships to area high school college-bound seniors pursuing a career in writing. Monthly Meetings Each month the Guild holds a General Meeting open to both members and non-members. The Rancho Mirage Public Library has long been the home for these meetings. Due to COVID-19, the Guild's monthly General Meetings are via ZOOM for the remainder of 2020. These meetings will continue to feature experienced and informative professional speakers with topics designed to help members achieve their writing and publishing goals. To register for a PSWG meeting on Zoom: log on to the PSWG website, go to the page announcing the speaker and click on Register. Then, before the actual Guild Zoom meeting day, you will receive an email with a link you will use to enter the meeting, along with the day and time for you to log on to the meeting. For more information regarding the schedule of speakers visit: Intensive Workshops & Writing Labs The Guild sponsors a series of Intensive Workshops and Writing Labs throughout the year with registration open to both members and non-members. Highly regarded professionals from the writing/publishing industry lead both the intensive workshops and writing labs. Topics cover everything from polishing your writing skills to finding an agent or a publisher. For more information visit: Critique Groups Critique groups consist of five or six member-writers who meet currently via ZOOM to help each member reach their writing and publishing goals. Members bring their material to read and to be commented on by other members. The group offers supportive feedback on the story, style, technique – whatever the writer needs to move a project to completion and, ultimately, the goal of publishing. Mentors: Every writer needs a mentor at some point in the writing process. The Guild has added mentoring to its list of stellar benefits. The makeup of mentors is like that of critique groups: comprised of dedicated member-writers who function as mentors and meet regularly with the writer. Manuscript Review: Experienced members of the Guild, including those who have successfully published a fiction or nonfiction book, will review up to thirty pages of a manuscript of a member's work-in-progress. They will provide feedback on flow, character development, point of view, description, whatever the writer needs to bring his or her work to a successful conclusion. Writing Contests: The PSWG monthly Writing Challenge offers members a chance to write in a genre outside their comfort zone and compete with other members for a monetary prize. The Memoir Contest and Poetry Contest are open to all members and each provides a monetary award. Desert Writers Expo This popular annual event is staged in conjunction with the Rancho Mirage Public Library and offers published writers an opportunity to showcase and sell their work. The Expo is also a chance for writers and guests to network and stay abreast of all the excellent work that is being created by Guild members right here in the Coachella Valley.
